Summer Celebrations

Summer is a reason to celebrate in and of itself. College students are free of classes for a while, parents are allotted more time with their kids, the days are warm and the nights are too. Everything about the world smells so crisp and clean. It’s time to celebrate, whether it’s a birthday, a wedding, a victory or just because you feel like it. Luaus are a summer blast. If we can’t be in Hawaii, then we bring Hawaii to us.

What to Do

Since you’re celebrating a joyous occasion, it’s a good idea to choose the Luau festivity. As you take photographs throughout the night, you’ll look back in the coming years to see your buddy dressed up in a grass skirt and think, “I remember that. Oh, that was so great!” The night itself will be festive, stimulating and unforgettable.

It’s a great way to spend an evening and the supplies for it are easily located. The Hawaiian Luau is associated with summer, so the supplies are always on hand during the season. You’ll be able to find props, costumes, decorations and foods to help make it as authentic as possible. In fact, bulk prices are everywhere, helping to make the event achievable even with a tight budget.

Get Into Some Grass

Most associate a luau with the grass skirts or the pa’u. Traditionally, these are created from raffia, or long palm fibers, woven together to create a grass skirt. If one were to choose the original look, you would wear a grass skirt and nothing more. However, for a more traditional look that keeps with most conventions, it’s suggested for women to don a coconut bra or minimal shirt. The grass skirts sold in shops are made from cotton or plastic. Men, women and children wearing the grass skirts will sport a luau look to remember. However, if men aren’t comfortable in the grass skirt, they can choose to wear floral shorts and shirts to keep with the luau theme.

Accessories are a must. Red, yellow or blue flowers are choice. Anyone not going with a grass skirt should consider bright shirts with flowers attached and khaki slacks. Footwear is usually bare feet, but flip-flops are permissible for those who have sensitive soles. Choose a pair that fits the theme of the party and matches your outfit. You wouldn’t want to throw anything off by wearing logos across your feet.

Lei Me Down

When we think luau, we think grass skirts and leis. Leis are an absolute must for any luau party. Red, yellow, green, blue, violet, orange, white or any possible color is an excellent choice. Choose an entire luau rainbow and hand them out to guests as they arrive. Of course, let them know they don’t have to be worn if the fabric chafes or inflames their necks. You don’t want guests scratching, burning or breaking out should they have vulnerable skin.

A luau is the perfect option for summer merriment. After all, it’s luau love for summer celebrations.
